Planning for collections care can be confusing and complicated. You have to balance the object’s needs alongside many other factors…budget, time, and staffing to name a few. Not to mention the regular changes in the availability of materials. In this episode, I look at all these factors, the reasons they exist, and ways to cope with them. Whether you’re new to collections management or have been at it for years, I hope this helps you consider some concepts to make the best of whatever your scenario can be.
Hi Kelly,
Great points! The secret to successfully manage an art collection is to find the right balance between collections needs, location, and resources.
One point I would like to add is storage design. We don’t often think about where is the best location in storage for each type of object/material but rather where it is most conviniente location for access. For instance, we know objects made of organic materials are better protected from humidity changes, pest, and damage when away from doors and walls, but depending on the size of the crate it might be placed right by the rolling door. Sounds familiar?
Looking forward to your next podcast. And I am also thankful to the internet, and YouTube!
